Steering Success: SKID CAR Training Accelerates Critical Law Enforcement Skill at COS

College of the Siskiyous Law Enforcement Academy

They’re swerving, sliding and spinning out… but it’s all good. In fact, it’s by design.

Students in the Law Enforcement Academy at College of the Siskiyous are taking control of their careers by losing control of their cars. Thanks to recent Strong Workforce funding, the College is receiving full support to upgrade its dynamic SKID CAR training facilities. The specialized instruction helps cadets learn how to recognize when oversteering or understeering is occurring, and how to respond to maintain control of the vehicle as it loses traction.

This training is a vital lesson for cadets who, as first responders, will often find themselves in situations out in the field where they may lose control while moving at high speeds — especially on rough roads or during the months of inclement weather the region is known for.

“In law enforcement, as in other public safety fields, we’re required to routinely drive in circumstances well beyond what most people will normally safely drive,” says Louis Mero, Director of the Law Enforcement Academy at College of the Siskiyous.

“We’re expected to be able to get to anywhere that people need that help … Learning how the vehicle works, how it really moves, understanding the limits of traction control, it's these kinds of experiences and critical training that gives us the necessary tools and understanding to be able to get safely where we need to be in order to help those who need it most.”

The Perfect Gig: Unique Pathway Proves Music to FLC Student’s Ears

Folsom Lake College Music Entrepreneurship Program

Alex Tyree’s professional goals are already approaching a crescendo — and his career is just beginning.

Thanks to the Music Entrepreneurship program at Folsom Lake College, Tyree is composing his own pathway as Assistant to the Music Director for the nationally recognized Music Circus, part of Broadway Sacramento. The fast-paced production runs six different musicals in the span of three months, demanding those involved to be highly skilled in their field.

The Music Entrepreneurship certificate program provides students with a comprehensive set of skills that are necessary in nearly every position in the music industry. These points of expertise include performing and recording music, as well as promoting, marketing, and managing musicians.

Before he landed the gig, Tyree attended a prestigious four-year university in the Pacific Northwest. After a year at the university, the musically inclined student says he didn’t feel connected to the curriculum.

“I enjoyed my studies there a lot, but I struggled quite a bit as a student,” explains Tyree.

“The realization hit that I’m already in debt and things aren’t going exactly how I thought. So, I decided to just … focus on the community college level where things are going to be cheaper, and things are going to be actually affordable, and I can still pursue my goals and aspirations.”

Increasing College Access for Rural Students Through Dual Enrollment.

Webinar from Jobs for the Future that may be of interest to you: Increasing College Access for Rural Students Through Dual Enrollment.

The webinar is being held on Wednesday May 10:30 to 11:30 AM PST.

You can register for the webinar here.

Webinar description:

Eighty-two percent of the people who live in areas deemed “higher education deserts” (at least 25 miles from a college or university) are rural residents. This physical distance can be a barrier to offering dual enrollment, a proven college and career readiness strategy that improves educational outcomes for students. Continuous innovation in the design of dual enrollment is critical to ensure opportunities are accessible and meet the unique needs of students from rural communities. Offering dual enrollment online is one promising strategy for reducing barriers for students, and JFF’s Pathways to Prosperity team is leading the development of an innovative online dual enrollment model reaching rural students through our Increasing College Access Network (ICAN) initiative. During this webinar, we’ll share examples from across the country of promising partnership strategies, course design practices, and delivery methods that support access, authentic learning, and student success in college courses.
