E-Blast October 2020

The 5^th Annual preserve Our Legacy:  Advancing African Americans in Nursing Conference was held on August 22, 2020, hosted in the Sacramento Region.  This virtual conference featured more than 20 professional nurses with expertise in a variety of subspecialties to inspire and guide more than 200 students and nurses to their next step in their careers.  This conference connected each level of student or practitioner to the next level from high school to associate degrees to doctoral degrees.  Yes 2 Kollege, African American Women’s Health Legacy, UC Davis Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, Capital Black Nurse’s Association, TEAL Group and Health Workforce Initiative partnered to support this amazing virtual event.

Dr. McLemore, San Francisco based,  presented as the keynote speaker where she shared inspiring information about advocacy, equitable access to education and supporting the health of diverse communities.  All educational pathways were represented for nursing, including Julie Holt, the Regional Director of Employer Engagement for Health in the North Region, presenting on the community college educational pathways available for health and co-enrollment with the BSN with the California State University, Sacramento program.   This is a very important pathway collaboration to support diversifying our workforce and supporting opportunities for equitable and affordable education pathways in nursing.  The Exploring Health Careers book written by fellow RDEE, Valerie Fischer, from the Central Mother Lode Region, book published through Health Workforce Initiative provided an excellent resource.  A valuable event with excellent information to inspire the future of the nursing workforce!

The California Community Reinvestment Grants (CalCRG) program Grant Solicitation for Fiscal Year (FY) 2020–21 is now available. The Grant Solicitation includes an overview of the program, eligibility criteria, application components and requirements, and the evaluation process and scoring criteria.

The Online Application Portal will be available on September 28, 2020, via a link that will be posted on this webpage. The application process is divided into two phases.

 Phase 1 applications must be submitted no later than 11:59 pm on Monday, November 2, 2020.

Yuba College received a Chancellor’s Office Improving Online CTE Pathways grant this past academic year. The primary goal was the development of a fully online CTE degree option for Yuba College students in the areas of agriculture and business.  Sandy Fowler, former Director of Career Technical Education programs at Yuba College (now Dean of CTE at Woodland College) and I, Dean of STEM and Social Sciences at Yuba College, were asked to assemble a team of talent to achieve the first-ever fully online CTE degree for our college.  Two discipline experts were identified to study employer and regional need for agriculture- and business-trained students, Liberty Harrison (business faculty member at Yuba College) and Brittney Strong (agriculture faculty member at Yuba College).  Their findings and hard-work led to the development of the following CTE fully online degrees:

Across the California Community College system (and beyond), the COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe impact on the ways in which education is planned, delivered, and experienced. These challenges have hit particularly hard around the delivery of high-quality, lab-based education, a critical component of Career and Technical Education (CTE), which is in turn a primary area of focus for community colleges.

With these realities in place for the immediate future, my goal as a R·H·T Regional Director has been to move to support culinary and hospitality instructors and their students, across the North Far North Regional Consortium, in any way possible.

Through the first few months of the pandemic, I kept in close contact with instructors, tracking their immediate challenges as well as successful responses and solutions during the strangest spring semester in memory, and working to provide collaborative responses where possible.

About 175 students from across northern California participated in virtual summer cyber camps organized by the ICT-Hub, Lassen College, Butte College, Mendocino College, Cosumnes River College, Sac City College, and Square Root Academy, where they received instruction from both community college faculty and students — something ICT-DM Regional Director Wendy Porter calls the “magic model.”

“This was an amazing opportunity for K12 students to explore tech education and for our Community College Students to get experience mentoring and to further their knowledge in cybersecurity,” Porter said.

Porter worked with the ICT-Hub and Irvin Lemus, Regional Coordinator for Bay Area Cyber Competitions, to introduce a new format for this year’s camps. Students enjoyed the experience, even though they might have been skeptical of the virtual environment at first.

“I thought learning Python and how information was communicated across the internet was useful and valuable,” one student said. “They were quite interesting subjects that I would like to know even more about.”

The Charles A. Jones (CAJ) Career and Education Center in Sacramento is offering a Manufacturing Pre-Apprenticeship in partnership with the Sacramento Valley Manufacturing Initiative (SVMI).

The training is completely free for the first 60 adult education students who meet all qualifications through December 2020, paid for with Cares Act funding.

Yuba College Veterinary Tech-March 2020

         Pets and Paddocks: Yuba College Veterinary Tech Program Delivers Dream Careers

     You’re at school, but you’re head-to-toe in medical scrubs. There’s a giant, chest-high bathtub in the corner. Oh, and there’s a llama in your class. 

If it sounds like a dream… well, for those aspiring to make a living working with animals, it is. Yuba College’s unique Veterinary Technology program is preparing students for versatile careers in the animal care industry, where they’ll earn great salaries helping vets heal… from the pound to the paddock. 

“It’s geared toward students going to work right after the program,” says Veterinary Technology Specialist and Yuba College faculty member Amber Kuykendall. “The opportunities are vast – I make a point of that in what we’re teaching.”

It’s a broad field, with virtually unlimited career possibilities. And while many program grads are succeeding in veterinary offices, others have gone on to high-paying positions in biomedical research, diagnostics, wildlife management and animal control, education, marketing, the food industry, and even exotic animal medicine.

No Scrubs: Lassen Community College Programs Produce Next-Level Nurses 

If there’s one thing that sets nurses apart from almost any other profession, it’s toughness. Not just physical strength and emotional grit, but a calm confidence tempered by experience and training. 

Elizabeth Harvey had the grit part down. A high school dropout and young mother escaping a bad relationship, “Lizzie” was determined to find her own, independent path to success. When she heard that nearby Lassen Community College was offering stackable health care certificates, she entered the Certified Nursing Assistant program, kickstarting a high-paying career in just a couple of months.

“You do have to make sacrifices,” says Harvey. “But it is well worth it.”

By the time Lassen relaunched its Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program in 2017, Harvey had added six years of professional experience, and had become determined to advance in her profession… come hell or high water.
