North Region Advanced Manufacturing

• On 2/21, the new Sacramento Valley Manufacturing Initiative (SVMI) was officially rolled out.  There were 60+ attendees, including many local high school and community college CTE leaders, at the standing room only event.  The purpose of the SVMI is to build a robust manufacturing sector in the Sacramento region by informing and supporting education and training providers about the needs of the 21st century manufacturing workforce. These efforts will address the chronic shortage of qualified and skilled workers in the manufacturing industry.

• On 3/9, Sacramento Community College will be offering an introductory series of workshops open to all Los Rios personnel ready to accept one of the first challenges in Design Thinking:  STOP TALKING – START DOING!  Participants will gain an understanding of the principles of Design Thinking. You will learn about the process as well as methods and tools to analyze user needs, prototyping, and generating ideas. You will also get the chance to apply these methods in a small group of four to six people, guided by Design Thinking coaches throughout the day.

• 3/17, The Hacker Lab is offering their Spring Startup Hustle.   A 5-week bootcamp designed to help participants launch a new startup.  Participants will be guided to stretch their ideas with insights that can lead to remarkable breakthroughs. The Hustle staff will introduce tools, perspectives, and connections to help you succeed.

• On Friday 4/20 there is being planned an event hosted by SVMI, that will be designed to better inform the local education community about vibrant career opportunities in the manufacturing sector.  Members of the newly formed SVMI Education Committee, which  includes both local educators and manufacturers, are planning the event and several more to come..

• The Career and College Transition Division Director at the California Department of Education (CDE), Donna Wyatt, will be visiting the Rocklin High School Manufacturing & Engineering program on April 13th.  Ms. Wyatt has select one representative high school statewide from each industry sector to visit.  Another testimonial of some of the great opportunities being presented to our student’s locally.

• 2/9, Sac Valley SME chapter hosted a tour at the Aerojet facility in Rancho Cordova.  Participants witnessed the finally testing of the rocket engine that had been manufactured at this facility.
