Center Of Excellence May News & Updates

If you’re anything like us, you’ve been both anticipating and dreading the April employment numbers as they represent the first full month where the stay home order was in place. The data reported below are unprecedented – spiking unemployment, decreased labor force participation, and double-digit industry losses. And it will not be surprising to see similar or worsening numbers with the upcoming release of May’s jobs data (expected on June 19).

The reopening of the economy that is happening now will be the next pivot point for job trends. So bear with us for several more weeks of anticipation, this time tinged with hope, until we know to what extent June will reverse the April and May trends.

Six Months to Six-Figures: Lucrative Law Enforcement Careers through COS POST Academy

With demand for qualified law enforcement professionals climbing, it pays to be a police officer. And when it comes to earning a six-figure salary while serving a community, College of the Siskiyous’s POST Academy is a pretty good place to start. 

“A student can show up here with no training,” says POST Law Enforcement Academy Director Lieutenant Jeremiah LaRue. “They can spend as little as just a couple thousand dollars … and they can get a job where you’re making a hundred thousand dollars a year with benefits. 

“Talk about return on investment.” 

For Veteran student Devin Paulus, POST (which stands for Peace Officer Standards and Training) was the “perfect fit.”

Imagine you’re in charge of a class of preschoolers who are climbing, jumping, throwing foam chairs, and just having a riot of a time. “I was at the end of my rope,” says Margarita Rankin, who was teaching full-time while attending Folsom Lake College’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program to build career skills. While supervising her class on a particularly wild day, she had an “a-ha” moment – realizing the perfect application of her FLC studies. “In my class, I learned about patience,” says Rankin, who left her career in the “rat race” of sales and returned to school in her 50s to follow her calling in pre-K education. “I needed to have a paradigm shift.”

North Far North Regional Chair Job Posting

The North Far North Regional Chair  is a regional position hosted at Butte College serving the 15 colleges in the North Far North region. The North Far North Regional Chair acts as first point of contact representing the California Community College Chancellor’s Office for regional inquiries.  There is extensive driving and travel required for this position.  The work schedule is Monday – Thursday, 7:30 am – 5:00 pm and Friday, 8am – 12 pm.  Over the summer the work schedule changes to Monday – Thursday, 7:00 am – 5:00 pm with Friday off.  This is an exempt position that requires occasional evening and weekend availability. The position Closes on 6/11/2020 11:59 PM Pacific.
