Above images are from the 6th annual Non-Traditional Employment for Women (N.E.W.) event was held on May 5th at Shasta College. This event was open to female high school students who identified interests in exploring career technical education. The purpose of N.E.W. is to introduce young women to growing opportunities for employment in the fields of Entrepreneurship, Fire Fighting, Emergency Medical Services, Administration of Justice, Computer Information Science, Heavy Equipment, Automotive and Diesel, Manufacturing, Welding, and Construction.
This event provided an opportunity for 240 students to be exposed to various career options and hands-on experience in welding, automotive and diesel technology, using fire-fighting equipment, and other activities related to jobs where men typically far outnumber women. A panel of professional women with experience working in these industries presented information on economic self-sufficiency and networking. These women also provided insight for these careers and encouragement for women to explore these careers.
