STE@M Mentoring Training, Rachelle Modena
According the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology the U.S. will need one million more STEM/STE@M (science, environment, technology, art, & math) professionals than the U.S. will produce over the next decade to retain its historical preeminence in science and technology. On July 12th, twenty-five junior high educators and counselors from around the North State were trained to lead special mentoring groups with 8th grade girls. The STE@M Mentoring Program, founded by Cari Lyn Vinci and offered through InVINCIbleEnterprises.com is comprised of nine mentoring sessions that include team building, career exploration, soft skill acquisition, and goal setting. Through this training a minimum 420 8th grade girls will be able to receive this specialized mentoring to help groom our next generation of female STE@M professionals. In addition, this program builds positive social connections between adolescent peers and another caring adult, which are protective factors and promote positive life outcomes. Education professionals from Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, Butte, Humboldt, Plumas, and Glenn Counties participated in the training. This regional event was lead by Rachelle Modena Small Business Deputy Sector Navigator (DSN) hosted at Shasta College with support from the other five DSN’s serving the North Far North, Charlie Pooler Advanced Manufacturing (Shasta College) , Heather Kelnhofer Agriculture Water & Environmental Technologies, Angela Cordell Global Trade and Logistics (Feather River College), Myron Curtis Information Technology & Communication (Butte College), and Trudy Old Healthcare (Butte College). The North Far North Regional Consortia provided additional financial support for the training further demonstrating the commitment of fostering STEM education and regional collaboration throughout the North State.
