LCC Program Uplifts New Generation of Nurses in the Far North
Lassen College’s new RN program
When it comes to the urgent need for new nurses in the Far North, “RN” might as well stand for “Right Now.”
With demand amplified by the global health crisis, the Susanville community’s call for RNs just keeps getting louder. Now, Lassen Community College is employing a DIY mindset, finding new ways to inject highly skilled professionals into the region’s nursing workforce.
“Susanville is small, and it’s very, very special,” says Christi Myers, Susanville native and Director of Nursing and Allied Health at Lassen Community College. “We have so much beauty here, but getting people from other areas to want to come here and work and jump into the lifestyle we live … we’re much slower pace than the big cities.
“We’re hoping with that, we’ll have some impact on getting some people that already know and love our community to want to stay here and work here.”
Northern Workforce Partnerships Close Old Skills Gaps, Open New Door-Business & Community Partners
What do Sears, Siemens, Sysco and Starbucks all have in common? They all start with an “S” – and they all spell success with “CC” at the center.
Thanks to Strong Workforce Program-supported partnerships, the relationship between North Far North community college students and the employers who hire them is tighter than ever. From Intel to Northrop Grumman, Amazon to AT&T, some of the nation’s biggest companies are lending their prestige to career education programs – and getting plenty in return.
“They are really providing a service for our communities and preparing workers for careers,” says Intel AI Education Manager Cristina Ortiz, who has helped coordinate the “AI for Workforce” partnership with Folsom Lake College’s Computer Information Science department since 2019. “Learners can get through [programs] quickly … and they’re right at the top of the hiring pool for having that latest skill.”
In 2026, the high school age population in the United States will peak at roughly 3.5 million students, and then start to decline by 15% in the following 18 years. Large demographic shifts reshape American communities and institutions, and higher education is no exception. As colleges and universities seek to address this "enrollment cliff," some have taken bold steps to redesign admissions.
Summary: The College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) is designed to assist migratory or seasonal farmworkers (or immediate family members of such workers) who are enrolled or are admitted for enrollment on a full-time basis at an institution of higher education to complete their first academic year.

Four Essential Best Practices for Engaging Partners and Practitioners to Advance Economic Mobility
In this blog, we explore four best practices for partner and practitioner engagement that can transform economic mobility initiatives.
Advancing economic mobility—a person’s ability to improve their economic status over time—is a complex challenge. To make meaningful and systemic changes that enhance communities with economic mobility, coordinated efforts across multiple sectors are pivotal. For any initiative or project aimed at enhancing economic mobility to succeed, the involvement of key partners and practitioners is not just beneficial—it’s essential. Years of practitioner experience makes it clear that effective engagement can lead to increased buy-in, higher productivity, and a more significant impact.
Key interest holders often include local government officials who can influence policy and funding decisions, workforce development agencies that connect individuals with job opportunities, and higher education institutions that provide the necessary training and education for upward mobility. Additionally, community organizations play a vital role in reaching and supporting marginalized populations, while employers and industry leaders can offer insights into labor market needs and create pathways for career advancement. Engaging these diverse partners ensures that economic mobility initiatives are informed by a wide range of perspectives and are better positioned to address the multifaceted challenges of improving economic outcomes for individuals and communities. This blog post explores four best practices for partner and practitioner engagement that can transform economic mobility initiatives.
