What’s the secret to the recent 2.6 percent boost in community college enrollment—the first bump since the pandemic, and the highest increase of any educational sector?1 It’s dual enrollment. In fact, DE students comprise 40 percent of the total enrollment increase at two-year institutions for the last two years.2 “Dual enrollment is good for the students, high schools, and colleges,” says Christina Overmiller, K-12 Pathway Coordinator serving the Sierra Community College District. Since she started her role in 2020, she’s watched CTE dual enrollment opportunities increase.

You can fight fire with fire. In fact, it happens to be one of California’s best weapons against wildfires. In the woods of Plumas County, forestry and fuel management professionals are upping their efforts to reintroduce prescribed fires to mitigate the spread of these devastating blazes. Projects include these prescribed burns, which help clear the old buildup of dead leaves and invasive vegetation on the forest floor to lower the risk of fast-spreading wildfires. These burns help clear the way for new, native plant species to grow, encouraging biodiversity in the region’s woodlands. Read More |

| Rural California schools and roads lose millions in federal funding after latest cuts For the last century, the money has gone to counties with large amounts of federal land that can't be taxed. Congress failed to include it in the upcoming budget. For more than a century, Congress has given extra money to counties with large tracts of federal land to help pay for schools, roads and other critical services. Now that financial lifeline appears to be dead after Congress didn't include it in the budget passed this month - a victim of the Trump administration's cost-cutting measures. The Secure Rural Schools Act would have brought in at least $33 million to California counties that have land owned by the federal government, such as the U.S. Forest Service. The money is intended to compensate counties for tax revenue they can't collect on federally-owned land. 'This loss (is) nothing short of catastrophic,' Liam Gogan, head of the Trinity County Board of Supervisors, wrote to Congress. 'This is not just a funding shortfall; it is an existential crisis. Our schools will suffer irreversible damage, emergency response will be paralyzed, and our economy - already fragile - will be pushed past the point of recovery.' Read More |

As this whitepaper succinctly demonstrates, collaboration — not competition — is the path forward for higher education. When institutions work together, they better position themselves to help more learners persist, progress, succeed and graduate. When institutions cooperate, they can shore up their financial bottom lines. And when there’s more collaboration, more institutions — and, most importantly, more learners — can win. Read More |

| | K12 SWP NFN Selection Committee Application |
| The intent of the K12 Strong Workforce Program (K12 SWP) is to create, support, or expand high-quality career technical education programs at the K-12 level that are aligned with the workforce development efforts occurring through the Strong Workforce Program. Supported by a partnership between the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) and the California Department of Education (CDE), $150,000,000 will be awarded to fund Career Technical Education initiatives designed to strengthen student pathways from secondary to post-secondary education. (See the K12 Strong Workforce page on the California Community College's Website for more information on K12 SWP.)
The role of the region's K12 Selection Committee is to identify high-quality applications that meet the expectations of the K12 SWP legislative intent. Various stakeholders will comprise the region's K12 Selection Committee to ensure that the applications selected represent and forward the priorities of our region. The Committee will review and score all applications submitted and make final recommendations for K12 SWP awards to local education agencies (LEAs).
The North Far North Regional Consortium would like to invite you to apply for the Selection Committee, to fill open positions on our ‘25-‘26 K12 Strong Workforce Program Selection Committee. Each Regional Consortium has a K12 Selection Committee that is responsible for reviewing all LEA applications that are requesting K12 SWP funds within its region (Education Code, Section 88829). The regional K12 Selection Committee makes all decisions related to selecting grant recipients and awarding specific funding amounts for each grant.
In addition to reviewing and scoring applications, requirements of the committee are to attend: Selection Committee CalibrationTraining Retreat (1 ½ days)-this retreat will be in-person with no ability to zoom in remotely. Our region is vast with districts being 9 hours apart from each other, so there will be a need to travel. The training will most likely be between the time period of October 14-16th, depending on the application due date set by the California Community Chancellor’s Office in the Round 7 RFA. Members must commit to this training or will be removed from the committee. Selection Committee Deliberation Meeting-this will be an all-day meeting from 8-4 in a location centrally located to the region (also in-person) and will be held around November 17-19th. Members must commit to the meeting or will be removed from the committee.
The term of service for the K12 Selection Committee will be from July 1, 2025 - June 30th, 2027. Individuals who have previously served on the K12 Selection Committee for 2 rounds are eligible to submit a new application. Individuals who applied in 24/25, as their first year, do not need to reapply. All applications must be submitted by Friday, April 25th at 5:00 pm. The applications will be reviewed and you will be notified of your acceptance by May 31st, 2025.
