North Region Advanced Manufacturing

On Friday 4/6, the entire 7th grade class of Lichen School in Citrus Heights, San Juan Unified District will tour the campus of Sierra College with special visits planned by several departments, including: Mechatronics, DES (Drafting Engineering Support), Engineering, Welding, and the new Advanced Manufacturing lab.  These 55+ young energetic students will be given a glimpse of possible career path options available to them in their local area.

Industry Tour, Sponsored by SME SacValley Chapter on 4/11, 4:00PM of S and S Machine – an industrial machine shop located in Roseville, California that manufacture custom precision machined parts to our spec on CNC machine tools. S and S Machine has about 25 employees and over 30,000 square feet of combined shop, office and warehouse space. They manufacture a wide range of items such as medical equipment parts, functional test fixtures for the electronics industry, aerospace parts, bicycle parts, machinery parts and just about anything else you can imagine that is machined from metal or plastic.

All are invited on 4/19, starting at 3:30 PM, to a Reverse Engineering and Low Volume Manufacturing Seminar sponsored by Go Engineer and hosted at Bill McAnally Racing in Roseville.  In this Live, Hands-On Seminar, you will learn from Industry Experts how easy it is to go from 3D Scanning to 3D CAD Directly into 3D Printing.

The newly formed SVMI (Sacramento Valley Manufacturing Initiative) is moving along quite nicely:

• They have organized with a board and executive director and will be nested under Valley Vision. The synergy from this partnership is very encouraging.

• They are moving forward with initial development funding grants from CMTC and SETA.

• Their Education Committee has been meeting regularly and has planned several events starting in April which will have CTE decision makers (Superintendents, trustees, site CTE coordinators and counselors) hearing about SVMI’s vision of manufacturers working directly with local education institution and providing them with a visit to a local manufacturer to see what the 21st century manufacturing facility looks like.  The first event and tour is being planned for 4/18 with members from the Rocklin Unified School District.  The day will begin at the District office with a brief presentation by SMVI members to the educators, followed with a tour of Garner Products, an advanced manufacturing company in Roseville.  Then swinging over to Sierra College, where 30%+ of the Rocklin Unified graduating class will be attending next Fall, to see the possibilities of continued education in the new Advanced Manufacturing facility.  Similar events are being planned with Elk Grove Unified, Folsom Cordova Unified, and Placer Union High School District for later in April or the first week in May.

• The Sacramento Business Journal ran a recent article, view this link, that spotlights SVMI.  https://goo.gl/ptysoU
